Behind the Blog: Finding Your Niche

One of the best parts about blogging is that it brings people together. In a space that could easily become competitive, I see bloggers giving advice, forming friendships and coming together to celebrate each other's creativity. I've got to say, it's easily been one of my favorite parts of blogging. I've developed so many friendships with like-minded creatives through Instagram, and we've helped each other to grow and learn new parts of the business. That's where the idea for this series was born.

Today, I'm excited to officially launch a brand new series here on Simply J and K: "Behind the Blog". When I started blogging, there was not a lot of help. I spent hours googling and teaching myself everything from setting up a website, to taking professional level photos and pitching my business to brands. How did I do it? A lot of trial (and a lot of error). In this series you can expect me to share a few of the tips and tricks i've learned along the way. I already dove into photography (here) a bit to see if it was something you guys were interested in (thanks for the love BTW), and was so overwhelmed with your response! Today, however, i'm covering something a bit different: finding your niche.

Why You Need to Identify Your Niche:

The question I get asked most is, "Kenzie, how can I get more followers." Well, there isn't really a one size fits all solution. But, if you are looking to grow the BEST way to do that is by narrowing your niche. So, what's a Niche? It's basically what you choose to write about. It should be the common thread that binds all of your posts together. For example, a Fashion Blogger may create recipes, but she or he will always include themselves in the photos with a trendy outfit to keep their followers engaged. Similarly, a travel blogger may showcase an outfit, but it would be an outfit to where on a romantic vacation in some far away place. Get it?

What's my Niche?

What's my niche? I started by sharing advice, then shifted to food & cocktails, then DIY, then fashion... well, you get the picture. The Niche of "Lifestyle" is hard. And honestly it took me a while to figure it out. But, I found that the content you all like the most was fashion and food. So, I focus most of my attention on those two subjects. Most of the time, you'll find them together in some way. Whether I'm cooking in a cute outfit etc.

If you're stumped on what your readers respond to, i'd suggest putting out a reader survey. It's a great way to get a feel for the types of content they want to see!
