How To Create The Perfect Fall Cheese Platter
Here in Indy it's really starting to feel like autumn. We've had a few days where the temps have dropped into the 50s, the leaves are just starting to change color and the harvest is sure to be in full swing soon. And, I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by creating the perfect fall cheese platter. Let's face it, i'll use any excuse I can to pull together a few of my favorite meats and cheeses.
Most people see a cheese board like this and run for the hills. Sure, it may look intimidating, but with these helpful tips you'll be creating a full spread like this one in no time. In fact, it's easy to pull together an elegant platter when you follow these simple steps!
Which Cheese Should You Choose?
Undoubtedly, choosing your cheeses is the hardest part of putting your board together. Typically, I like to choose between 2-4 varying types from the sections I've outlined below.
Soft: Brie, Mozzarella, Ricotta or Goat Cheeses
Aged: Havarti, Sharp Cheddar, Parmesan, Gruyere or Parmesan
Firm: Manchego, mimolette or asiago
Blue: Camembert, Blue Cheese or Roquefort
For this platter, I chose a simple Havarti and Brie. Because they are J and I's favorites! If I created this for a few more people I would have also added a nice Blue Cheese for some texture.
What's Charcuterie?
I've had plenty of friends who stare at me with blank faces the second I mention Charcuterie. And, I fully understand why. It can look a little frightening, but when paired with the right cheese it's simply delicious!
My Favs: Cured Sausage, Prociutto (always include this),Paté, Salami, soppressata or chorizo.
My advice? Head to store and grab a few of the options I listed above to test. Then, let your tastebuds to the rest!
Choose Your Accompaniments
Here comes the really fun part. I tend to go crazy in Trader Joe's when i'm picking out the accompaniments for a cheese board. Here are a few of my favorite additions:
Fig or Apple Butter: You guys, go to TJ's and try these. I swear, you'll love them.
Fresh Fruit: Figs, Strawberries, Apples and Grapes. Adding a bit of fruit to your platter not only looks incredible, but adds a sweet taste to your cheeseboard. Plus, it's a great option to have for guests who may not be a fan of charcuterie or dry cheeses.
Olives: From an olive spread to seasoned italian olives, the sky is the limit. I added a few marinated pieces to this board, which were a huge hit!
Crackers: These are a must. They pair perfectly with the cheese and provide an easy snacking option for guests. Pro tip: Make sure to buy an extra box, they go fast!
That's it! Easy, right? What do you like to include in your cheese boards?

K
