Take Photos that Capture your Family or Relationship

There are SO many different types of family pictures. Is your family goofy? Take a picture with funny faces or props. Are you more serious? Take a moody black and white shot. Before you even begin to think about what you're going to wear, think about what you want to convey in your shot. For our photos, J and I wanted to show a simple, easy, relaxed feel for our first year as a married couple. So, we opted to take our photos at home in casual (but chic) clothes.

Pick A Base Color

Now that you have your photo feel down, it's time to figure out what you're going to wear. My suggestion is to start by picking out a base color that works for you and your significant other. J and I are both pale with dark hair and blue eyes, so shades of blue tend to work well on us.  J chose a navy flannel shirt and I opted for a dress with navy blue undertones. An important thing to note is that one of you should wear an interesting print to make your photos visually appealing. For us, my paisley Free People dress did the trick.

*If you have a different skin color or tone as your significant other try a tone that works well on most people like burgundy or olive.

Add A Secondary Color

It's easy to tie your photo together by adding a secondary color in a few different places. We chose to add a bit of Christmas magic to our photos by adding olive green. From my dress, to the small pine trees we added in the background, the color helped tie our entire photo together.

Picking The Right Hair And Makeup

I'm all for lots of makeup, but something about a holiday photo feels like it should be natural and elegant. To achieve our cozy "at home' shoot, I chose a subtle gold eyeshadow and a simple red lip to add a little bit of color. However, if you're shooting a glam christmas card photo i'd suggest punching it up with a bit more makeup!
