Indiana: A Day on the Road

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Visit Indiana for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

When people say that Indiana isn’t pretty, I can’t help but roll my eyes. From never-ending fields to small towns filled with charm, there isn’t one thing about this gorgeous state that I call home I would change.

There’s so much of Indiana that I haven’t seen. Admittedly, I’m a city girl. I was born and raised in Indianapolis, and didn’t typically venture too far out into the countryside. My mom and I decided to try out the Indiana Food Trails that took us North to Lafayette and then back down and West towards Plainfield and Danville. From the “Best” milkshakes we’ve ever had to a stop at a candy shop that’s been on Main St. for ages, every moment of this trip was memorable. Here’s a little bit about our favorite stops from the day:

Candies and ‘Scream in Lafayette

As we entered Lafayette, we stopped by Igloo Frozen Custard stand, and it was the PERFECT treat to kick of the trip. The inside was covered in candy pink colors and the outside had the sweetest hues of blue. I grabbed a Vanilla Swirl Cone topped with sprinkles and my mom opted for plain!

When we first pulled onto Main Street in Lafayette, I felt like I had been transported back in time. Seriously, if you’ve ever seen the Notebook – it reminded me of the street they dance on at midnight. The streets were lined with boutiques, flower shops and diners BUT my favorite shop was easily Mccord Candies. It’s best known for its candy-striped awning which has been a staple on Main Street since 1912. They have the BEST soda fountains and I grabbed some Malted Milk Balls and Chocolate Raisins which we’d eaten all of by the end of the day. (WHOOPS!)

For the Food Connoisseur

YUM! Is all I can say about the rest of our stops in Lafayette. We swung by Bistro 501, which was easily my favorite restaurant of the trip (see their menu here). The drinks were top notch, and the French Countryside inspired setting was right up our alley.

We also found time to walk along the Saturday Morning Farmer’s market filled with fresh flowers, vegetables and a homemade pasta stand that looked amazing!

Diners and Coffee on the WestSide

On the second day of our adventure, we took a drive to Danville to check out a few local spots closer to us. We stopped by the Breadbasket Café and Bakery, which was a tiny little bakery located in a converted house. I loved the Red Velvet cake – it’s a must if you’re a red velvet fan!

We ended our trip the only way that seemed appropriate – with milkshakes! I can’t believe that I’d never been to the Oasis Diner until now. It’s located in Plainfield and is known for its amazing tenderloin and shakes (of course). I opted for the Chocolate Milkshake and was NOT disappointed. For those living in Indy or those looking to visit, it’s super close to the city, so make sure to stop by and check it out.

We had a blast on our trip – and can’t wait to take another drive around Indiana soon! If you're looking to visit on your own you can Learn More About Indiana Food Trails here.
